What is Erica’s Philosophy About Yoga?
Many Western people are concerned that yoga is a religion and will not mesh with their current religious practice. However, yoga is what you make of it. It doesn’t matter what religion a person practices as they can incorporate the positive mental attitudes, loving kindness and inner connected-ness between body, mind and spirit of yoga into their particular religious beliefs. For some, yoga is and always may be a physical form of exercise. For others it deepens their inner connection to the divine. If either perspective serves the individual in a positive way, there is a benefit.
In my classes in particular, I do offer many of the traditional styles and thought processes of yoga. I also find it important to instruct my students as to the organs detoxed in each pose as well as the emotional connection therein. One could say that yoga is truly in the breath, then the hands and feet, then the pose. However, stripping all of that away, it is my opinion the yoga deepens our inner and outer self within the mind or spirit and can unlock the heart or soul. With that said, whichever of these phases a person chooses to start their practice is uniquely appropriate for them. I have learned long ago that we think we are doing our yoga, but our yoga is really doing us!

In the words of Deepak Chopra (now on the Yoga.com Advisory Board):
“There exists in every person a place that is free from disease, that never feels pain, that cannot age or die. When you go to this place, limitations which all of us accept cease to exist. They are not even entertained as a possibility. This is a place called perfect health.”
